Evil school system.

One week's notice that the first graders are reenacting the first Thanksgiving as Pilgrims and Indians.

The children will make hats, and if the parents want they can send full costumes.

If?

IF??  Are you kidding?  Plymouth isn't THAT much out of period...  I would LOVE an excuse to make a little late period outfit for MT#1, and I even have some brown wool laying around.

But not in one week.  *pouts*  Evil school system.

I went to Plimouth Plantation a couple of years ago -- it's a Living History site up in Massachusetts that runs year round. I totally wish I had a job like that.

Those people can really do persona well, too. They never broke out of character, even when tourists asked them stupid questions.

Dude. I hear you. Every day I wish I could have a job that had *something* to do with history, or reenactment, or research, or something.

Oh, SADNESS! That really sucks. I'm shocked that they didn't give you more notice than that - I mean, what if you want to go see the play? most places require a few weeks notice to take time off!

It's not a play for the whole family - they are just dressing up and eating a feast in costume. (Sounds more and more like the SCA every minute!)

Well, the Evil School System(tm) doesn't expect you to make proper costumes. They expect you to cobble something together out of trash bags, old curtains, duct tape and staples.

If you did make a beautiful authentic costume for MT#1, next year they'd expect you to make costumes for everyone. Because it's not fair if one kid has a beautiful costume and the rest don't.

It's a shame you can't all show up as a properly-dressed pilgrim family :D

And how is this different from the SCA? *ducking and running*

In the SCA we use *period* trashbags. And real duct tape.

Dude, you could totally throw together a relatively accurate Wampanoag (http://www.plimoth.org/discover/wampanoag-life/stitches-time.php) outfit! She would look awesome! (http://www.distancelearningassociates.com/Boston/Celia%20with%20Wampanoag%20Woman.jpg) ;)

Or, you know, she could go as a Pilgrim. Be all English and stuffy and having 11 children.

I thought briefly that her old Moorish garb might pass for Native American-ish, but the colors are all wrong. If I just had some deer hide laying around...

One week! That's not fair!

My younger son's fourth grade teacher had them do a play based on Roanoke Island and Jamestown (he's now 11th grade). I dressed all the girls in the class by hemming up my garb.
My mother made a pilgrim dress for me in 4th or 5th grade out of an old sheet that she dyed grey (for Halloween). Gee. Maybe that's why I like late-period garb, ya think??

Six months ago, I had never made any late period garb so I didn't even know where to start. Now I keep thinking "It wouldn't be *THAT* hard."

Could you whip up something that is completely machine finished and missing details, that you could fix up proper later?

If I weren't panic sewing my own garb for Holiday Faire at the moment, I probably could. And as much as I love her, my last minute costuming takes precedence over hers. ;)

To make matters worse, she keeps saying "PLEASE Mommy can I dress up like a Pilgrim?"
