I R Published!

You have to have an account for Your Wardrobe Unlock'd to see the whole thing...

http://yourwardrobeunlockd.com/basics/projects/426-project-planning-for-success

(At least for right now, a summary shows up on the homepage, not sure how long that will last though).

IT'S SO COOL!  This is the long, nicely-edited version of a) my Project Planning for A&S class from Pennsic two years ago, and b) a string of rambling posts to LJ shortly after that, which never actually were brought to a resolution.  I have heard from a few people that the class and the posts were helpful to them, and hopefully having the (completed) article in an online journal will help even more people.

Not to mention... it's cool to be published!

Thtupid Question

Recently, I designed my very own knitted item, a cowl which I knitted up in a yarn I spun all by myself, and I felt pretty clever about the whole thing thankyouverymuch.  But I haven't posted it to my Ravelry projects yet, because I have a Doubt.  It ultimately comes down to a copyright issue.  If I say that I have come up with a design myself, and someone else out there in the world came up with their own design but copyrighted it, is my design in violation even though I developed it without knowledge of their design?  Same thing with machine embroidery designs.  I have designed some really cute embroidery designs over the past week, but what if someone else has digitized the same thing?  How do I prove that I didn't steal their work?

*frets*

Would appreciate any input from thems what know more about copyright than I do...

rumors of my death

 have been highly exaggerated.

I can't blog (reading or writing) and knit at the same time.  A gal has to have her priorities, you know.

Observations

Un-knitting is not nearly as peaceful and meditative as knitting.  Just in case you were wondering.

Hmph

So far, I'm not terribly impressed with this OpenID thing.  I mean, it's great and makes sense, in theory.  But the one time I have tried to use it (not at Dreamwidth, btw), it completely, totally, and all ways shapes and forms failed.  It would give me a weird endpoint error; or it would take me to a valid login page with my other account, but then fail to actually log in me in at the original site.  Hmph.

Dreamwidth Code...I haz one

Free to good home:

Plz let me know if you use it.  Mostly just because I'm curious, not because I have a backup plan for it or anything.  ;-)

This is your semi-irregular reminder...

BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER!!!!

We all know it's important, but none of us ever do it regularly (OK, if you do, you are the exception and not the rule) so this is your reminder to dig out your media and back up those files that are irreplaceable.

My Smart Phone Ate my Post

I *had* a long post about how inspired I am feeling to work on SCA projects again. But I hit the wrong button on my Blackberry and Opera Mini ate my post. So now I have nothing to show for the fact that my thumbs REALLY hurt.

ROAD FRICKIN' TRIP!

OMG.

The Museo del Traje in Madrid is going to have an exhibit based on the costumes of Lope.  I.e., fashions of 16th century Spain.  September to November this year.

Link to the exhibit info

A description of the movie

...must...find...exhibit...catalog!  Or scrape up the dinero for a blitz to Spain for a long weekend!

home safe

Laundry has been started, and microterrorists hugged until they gasped for breath.  Pennsic was full of ups and downs for me this year, BUT: the little A&S gears are once again cranking in my brain, which hasn't happened since before Known World Costuming Symposium last year, so this is A Good Thing.

Pennsic Happenings

Because I haven't posted about this enough to day... We have some fiber happenings scheduled for Pennsic at the Spanish Peacock booth.

Monday, 8/9, 2:00 - 3:00: Spin In
Tuesday, 8/10, 2:00 - 3:00: Lucet Clinic
Thursday, 8/12, 2:00 - 3:00: Knit In
(times subject to change)

(I think there is a Wire Weaving class too, but I'm not sure when that is!)

Also just in time for Pennsic - Spanish Peacock now stocks Brown Sheep wool! Weights and colors specially selected for reenactment projects. Pre-literate stockings, anyone?

ISO Alcega Experts

When the patterns say "fold the fabric in half crosswise", does that mean the same as a modern's pattern directions to fold in half lengthwise, matching selvages?

If so, is there some distinction in Alcega as to which side is the fold and which the selvage?  I was guessing the top was selvage, but then I realized that's based on experience with modern patterns...

Just curious...

Pennsic Prep

A long time ago, a friend - who played in a Ren Faire,  but knew lots of SCAdians - asked why it is we always have this "Pennsic Panic" where sometime in June it dawns on us that oh crap we have an awful lot to get done before War!  Isn't Pennsic two weeks in the summer every year? Can't you just work on the garb all year round and skip the last minute crunch period?

At the time, her question made good sense.  That was over eight years ago.  And I can tell you that the only years I *don't* have a last minute frenzy of Pennsic prep activity are the years I don't go to Pennsic!

Well, this year is no exception.  I just started digging out all the projects that didn't get finished *last* year.  And realizing that I probably have just as good a chance of getting them done this time around!  Bring on the sewing!

(This is the first interest I've felt in sewing since January or thereabouts... basically, since I learned to knit.  I was very worried I had fatally burned out on making garb, so this resurgence of enthusiasm is a GOOD thing!)

Knit hunh?

Someone in recent history was mentioning a knitters group on LJ which was particularly good for n00bs with questions.  Like, those of us who seem to wrap a YO differently every single time we try.  :-\

Just to prove I'm not making this s#!^ up

I really did make MT#1 sandals for Storvik Novice this past weekend.  It was a VERY educational process...

To wit:
1) I learned we have a crapload of leather and leather working supplies in this house.  It doesn't seem like it because they aren't all consolidated together in one spot.
2) The veggie tanned cow I used for the sole leather was WAY too stiff for little child shoes.  When she ran, her foot would flex and the sole wouldn't which meant that the front of the shoe came right off her toes because
3) Goat hide is WAY too thin for a structural part that goes over the tops of her foot.  After running around for a while, the goat began to give and the front loosened up, and the shoe came right off her toes.

And she tripped and fell quite a bit.

But she was a good, grateful, appreciative child, which was smart, because the sandals were close enough that I'm tempted to try again... some design this time that has a cord to go from the part over her toes back around the ankle, to help keep the durn thing on her feet.

*dies*

I'm running around the house, collecting supplies to see whether I *really* have what it takes to throw together a pair of medieval-oid shoes.  MT#1 is following me around all squealy at the very thought of shoes made just for her.  I draw a prototype shoe, and she says, "Is it an old fashioned shoe?"

Um, yes honey, it's for an SCA event.

"Oh, because those are the shoes that Jesus wears!"

*facepalm*  OK, honey.
